Our mission is to help young people develop the social and emotional skills needed to tackle the daily challenges that school, life, friends and their communities throw their way. We believe in gamification, community and meeting young people where they're at.

 

The Journey

Rogue started out in 2016 as an instructional support project run by an international staff of teachers at a small school in Cairo, Egypt. Having seen the impact it had on students, the team decided to expand the experience to all students around the world. As the team grew, we continued to work with young people, parents, psychologists and teachers, combining their experiences and our strengths as educators and product designers to build a state of the art app.

 

The Research

Rogue falls under the umbrella of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), an intersection of education and developmental psychology. Our classes are based on the integrated framework and the 5 core SEL competencies designed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). CASEL is the most widely-used research framework, leveraged by schools and educators all around the world. 

The Formula

RELEVANCE
We show students the real impact of the skills on their lives by having them actively practice it in spaces/situations that they care about; it's never 'because it's good'.
 

AHA MOMENTS!
We  use science to create aha moments about how their brain, emotions and even social circles work. We give them the 'manual', which creates a strong sense of empowerment and a renewed sense of self awareness.

TOOLS
Discussions and reflections are nice, but unless they’re coupled with concrete strategies, students will have no way of developing their skills. For example, a tool for being more empathetic is “Five questions you should ask before you react to someone”. We don't leave it to chance.

SELF EFFICACY
All these components boil down to building a student’s sense of self efficacy, thus creating virtuous cycle of growth. Most ‘non-learning’ starts from “I’m just not …”; we want to replace it with “We all are...I am… I can…”.

Students hear about social and emotional skills all the time, whether in the form of a pep talk from their parent, an explicit class at school, or a note from their teacher to “do better” or “be kinder”. However, they rarely change their behavior. We believe we have a powerful formula that helps students get on board!
